Gilded mansions were created in America by the richest businessmen and elite during the 1870s up to the early 1900s. The elites enjoyed so much abundance and were able to amass great fortunes due to expansions of railroads, steel, fossil fuels, and tobacco which allowed them to put up larger than life structures. Many Gilded mansions still stand today, they are either declared as historical landmarks and preserved under the care of the government. Some Gilden mansions are restored and turned into restaurants and famous hotels, while some remain with the family members of original owners.
Gilded Mansions look like real palaces, they were designed by prominent architects and contain stunning balustrades, antique furniture, collectibles, and rare works of art that were either imported from Europe, South Africa, and Egypt.
Gilded Mansions are remnants of a gone by era, they are considered as temples that have preserved culture in time. A social ritual that was prevalent during the 19th century for high society. Gilded Mansions have immensely grand dining rooms made fro gala dinners, ballroom area, and their own library area. Owners of Gilded Mansions are also known for creating stunning and uber glamourous Christmas decors- that are unforgettable and truly breathtaking.

Biltmore Country Estate
Biltmore mansion is owned by George Washington Vanderbilt, it has 250 rooms and is 175 square feet. Richard Morris Hunt designed this mansion and is considered the largest house in America. The house leaves an undeniable spectacular feel- especially during Christmas. The Banquet Hall houses a 40-foot tall tree with 500 electric lights. It takes you back to the 19th century. George Vanderbilt usually invites 200 estate employees and their families during Christmas Eve to receive their presents. 120 years later, this Gilded mansion still features extravagant dinners.
There is a total of 21 designers who create the yearly design, and every room in the mansion has its own mini-theme to make it extra meaningful and special.

Newport Mansions during Christmas
The Elms Newport Mansion has what we can call as overstated opulence. It features superb craftsmanship and artistry that was experienced during the Gilded Age. The Berwind family were surely able to enjoy strolling the garden paths and the stunning vistas back when they were still alive. This gilded mansion is complete with staff sleeping quarters, kitchen, butler’s area, basement with furnaces, coal area, and a very cool roof deck.

The Mansion is open for guests every Christmas from November 23 to January 1. There are three mansions available for guests, ‘ The Breakers, The Elms, and the Marble House. It is bedecked with 30 Christmas trees, and floor to ceiling poinsettia tree, plus hundreds of fresh flowers and lush evergreens.
The Breakers Mansion
The Breakers Mansion is no longer owned by its original owners, it is now considered as a house museum and is under the care of the Preservation Society of Newport County, – the Marble House, the Elms, and the Breakers. It is usually visited by thousands of guests during the winter.
Historically, these Gilded mansions were not usually decorated or presented during Christmas, but mostly used for gala events and important events for the family-like weddings, most of these mansions also served as summer cottages for the elite. Only in modern times, are they decorated and bedecked with Christmas decors much to the delight of visitors around the world.
