5 Most Memorable, Expensive and Rare Polly Pocket Toys

Polly Pocket was designed by Chris Wiggs back in 1983, the purpose was to make his daughter Kate happy. He was inspired by the shape of the make-up powder compact and decided to fashion a small house for tiny dolls. This design impressed Bluebird Toys in Swindon, England so much, they decided to license his concept and the first Polly Pocket toys officially appeared in stores in 1989. It was an instant hit, and millions of children fell in love with Polly Pocket toys. During the 80’s and the 90’s children couldn’t get enough of Polly Pocket toys. It became a status symbol, and even teenagers were fond of playing with Polly Pocket, since the internet wasn’t yet used like we do now.

Mattel soon learned about this wonderful toy and signed a distribution arrangement with Bluebird Toys for Polly Pocket items in the 90’s. However, Bluebird toys suffered from economic issues, they tried their best to avoid multiple takeovers from Mattel but were not able to succeed. Today, the original Bluebird Toys have become valuable collectables. While Mattel Polly Pocket toys are still on the market, but could not live up to the hype and fame of the previous designs created by Bluebird Toys.

The original Polly Pocket toys that children were found of playing with during the 90’s was made of plastic cases that opened to form a dollhouse. The dolls were less than an inch. The dolls could be folded in the middle like the case, and had circular bases which slotted into the holes of the case interior allowing them to stand. Unlike the modern Polly Pocket Mattel designs, the older ones are tougher and could withstand the test of time.

In 1998, Mattel redesigned the Polly Pocket, they made the dollars larger, with a more life like appearance and signature straight ponytails instead of the curly bob hairstyles. Clothes of the new Polly Pocket dolls were also made by Genie Toys, they are made from rubber plastic clothes that are removable and could easily be washed.

Today the original Polly Pocket toys could fetch as high as $5,000. Collectors love the pieces so much, and would take great lengths to get hold of the original designs.
